Why do Merrimack Canoes cost more than some other canoes?
Merrimack canoes are completely hand-crafted by highly skilled and experienced canoe builders. The quality of material used is the finest available. For example, only premium, hand selected cherry and ash are used for our canoe’s ribs, seats, decks, and gunwales. The carbon fiber and Kevlar fabrics we use to build our composite hulls are very expensive. The amount of time spent building your canoe is many times that spent in the building of most other canoes. High quality (and costly) fasteners are used throughout to ensure your Merrimack Canoe will provide a lifetime of use. It is still true that you “get what you pay for”. back to top
How do I know which model is best for me?
Refer to our “Buyer’s Guide” page. You need to know what kind of canoeing you plan to do most of the time. The fact is, there is no one style that will be perfect for all types of canoeing. So decide, realistically, what you think you will be doing most of the time and choose a canoe that is designed for that activity. We have a couple of models that we consider great “all-around” canoes. These are our most popular models. Give us a call and we will talk to you about your needs. back to top
How much will it cost to pack and ship my canoe?
We can give you a better estimate when you call, but packing and shipping generally runs about 10% - 20% of the cost of the canoe within the continental U.S. back to top
How long will it take to build my Merrimack Canoe?
There is a good chance that we will have the canoe you want in stock. We try to keep the most popular models and colors around. If we do not have what you want, we can usually build it within 4 weeks, probably sooner. back to top
Are the wood parts of my canoe going to require a lot of maintenance?
No. A couple of times a year, depending on how much use your canoe gets, your canoes’ wood parts will benefit from an application of oil. Any good quality marine oil will work. We like Deks Olje wood oil, but there are other oils that will work as well. The interior ribs are sealed in resin and are completely maintenance free. Refer also to our “Care and Maintenance” page. back to top
How can I tell how old my Merrimack Canoe is?
The last two digits of the Hull Identification Number (HIN) on the hull of your canoe indicate the year of manufacture.
The HIN is a twelve digit number that tells all about your canoe. Example: MCKTN018K506. MCK is the ID for the Merrimack Canoe Company, letters 4 & 5 designate the model, digits 6,7& 8 is the sequential number built this model year (Model year is from August to July.), the letter digit 9 is the month the canoe was built ( A is January - L is December), digit ten is the calendar year the canoe was built in, digit 11 & 12 is the model year. So this example HIN is a Tennessean that was built in November 2005 and is the 18th 2006 canoe built. back to top
How much is my older Merrimack Canoe worth?
We are sorry, but we cannot "appraise" older Merrimacks. To do so would require us to inspect the actual canoe, which is impractical. Generally it is easier and more economical to sell your canoe locally. Shipping costs can be prohibitive for a used boat. Something is ultimately worth what someone else is willing to pay you for it. Better yet, pass your Merrimack along to a family member or friend!
Do you do restoration work on older Merrimack Canoes?
